Hi there …

I started this website to promote my new book project “Respect the User’s Time – Experience Architecture and Design for Efficiency.” I am a senior experience architect for software-intensive products and a researcher in human-computer interaction (HCI). All of my career, I have worked in product definition, most of the time in complex industrial domains. For a few years, I designed mobile phone applications for consumers. I am driven by the challenge of simplifying applications and making them valuable, understandable, trustworthy, actionable, efficient, and delightful for humans. I sometimes call myself a professional simplifier.

Many of the techniques presented in the book “Respect the User’s Time – Experience Architecture and Design for Efficiency” have been created for industrial projects. I believe that a well-defined design process guides the experience architecture and design work and provides sufficient space and time for creativity and exploration. I also believes that good architecture and design decisions should include the non-perceivable underlying structure and functions, not only the perceivable surface and perceivable design elements.

My design ambitions are as follows:

  • Value (addressing business and user needs)
  • Efficiency (minimizing execution and waiting time as well as cognitive load)
  • Memorability (offering a unique and emotionally appealing design language)

Beside my professional work as an experience architect and HCI researcher, I am the co-chair of the “AI in HCI” Conference (Artificial Intelligence in Human-Computer Interaction, affiliated with the HCI International Conference). The AI in HCI conference brings together researchers from industry and academia to share advances in the research area of AI in HCI.

In 2019, I have won a Red Dot Award.

My education is mixed. I have received a PhD (Dr. phil.) in Information Science (Social Science) from the Freie Universität Berlin and a master’s in Computer Science (Diplom-Informatiker) from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (both in Germany).

In my spare time, I write stories for kids.

All opinions I express on this website are solely my own and do not express the opinions of my employer.
